Chicken Farmers of Ontario introduces insurance coverage

New Reovirus policy complements the existing avian influenza coverage.

Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) has introduced a new insurance coverage for Reovirus, a viral arthritis affecting poultry. This initiative strengthens the protection for Ontario's family-run chicken farms, complementing the existing avian influenza coverage.

Provided by Poultry Insurance Exchange (PIE), the Reovirus insurance includes veterinary fees, laboratory fees, cleaning and disinfection costs, and a quantification model aiding farmers with income loss. This strategic move aligns with the 2023-2025 CFO Strategic Plan and demonstrates the industry's commitment to risk management.

Murray Opsteen, chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario, emphasized the significance of such insurance amid global threats like avian influenza. André Bourbonnière, incoming general manager at PIE, expressed satisfaction in supporting Ontario chicken farmers against financial loss due to Reovirus.

The CFO acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the Ontario chicken industry value chain, including the Association of Ontario Chicken Processors and Ontario Broiler Hatching Egg & Chick Commission, in championing this crucial initiative.
