According to the USDA, the South African chicken meat consumption reached 32 kg per capita in 2010, a rise of 80% in just 15 years. The Brazilian chicken meat contributed decisively to support that growing demand.
According to USDA, South Africa imported 240,000 tons of chicken meat in 2010, thus securing a global internal offer in excess of 1.5 million tons, from an estimated local production of about 1.3 million tons.
From the imports, a little more than 74% by volume, or 178.200 tons, were supplied by Brazil, a chunk that represents around 12% of the global internal offer and 13.7% of the domestic production. Argentina (12%), Canada (6%) and UK (3%), altogether, supplied 21%, while USA just 1%. The remaining 4% were supplied by several other countries.
