Pilgrim’s adopts cost-based pricing of chicken
With feed-ingredient costs ranging near historic highs and chicken companies unable to pass those costs along to consumers, the industry’s business model is broken and needs fixing, said the chief executive of the nation’s second-largest chicken company where cost-based pricing of chicken is part of the fix. Pilgrim’s CEO Bill Lovette said the chicken industry appears to be headed toward production cuts between 6% and 8% by the fourth quarter of 2011, which would help raise chicken prices in 2012, but something more is needed – a way to pass high and volatile ingredient costs along to consumers.

Less corn may be used for animal feed
The latest World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report suggests that more corn may be used for ethanol than for animal feed, bringing forward concerns from groups like the National Chicken Council, who say that such numbers could set a worrying precedent. The WASDE, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, predict that 5 billion bushels of corn will be used for feed and related purposes in the 2010/2011 crop year, which runs through September, while 5.05 billion bushels will be used for ethanol and byproducts.

Animal feed costs biggest challenge for turkey industry
Production costs, including rising animal feed prices, are the greatest challenge for today's turkey industry, said Rick Sietsema, partner and CFO of Michigan-based Sietsema Farms, in a recent testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Feed accounts for 70% of the cost of raising a turkey, said Sietsema, and corn accounts for 70% of the feed mix. As corn and other feed prices have increased, so have overall production costs.

Improved testing and new thinking needed for phytases
With numerous phytase products on the market, but differing results when applied on farm, the need for the more effective testing and evaluation of phytase efficacy in animal feed was raised at the first International Phytase Summit. Another message to come out of the summit was that the extensive use of phytase enzymes in pig and poultry diets has raised the need for more accurate determination of phosphorous and calcium requirements.
