Novus, biotech company partner to develop animal nutrition enzymes
Novus International Inc. and biotechnology company Verenium Corporation have partnered to develop and commercialize animal nutrition enzymes targeting the poultry, swine, beef, dairy and aquaculture markets. The partnership, which will include equal shares in representation, costs and profits for both companies, will allow Verenium to "become a more active participant in the animal health and nutrition marketplace," said James Levine, president and CEO of Verenium.

Taiwan co-funds chicken feed donation to Libya farmers
The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund has partnered with Mercy Corps to procure 125 tons of chicken feed for Libyan farmers, according to reports. The $95,000 move was intended to stabilize Libya's poultry industry, which is suffering from a disrupted supply chain and expensive feed prices.

Cargill expands with Russia animal feed facility
Cargill has opened a new animal feed facility at its Efremov, Russia, complex that is set to produce 50,000 metric tons of poultry and swine feed products. The facility will focus on the production of prestarter and starter feed for chickens and baby pigs, as well as protein-vitamin-mineral concentrates, according to the company.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s allegiance to corn-ethanol was recently on display at a luncheon in Washington, where the Secretary delivered his oft-repeated position that biofuel production plays only a minor role in higher corn and food prices. Iowa-based poultry and pig feed ingredient manufacturer, Vi-COR, opened a 70,000-square-foot manufacturing plant and warehouse in Mason City, Iowa, in May. Vi-COR’s new facility is located close to its original manufacturing plant, also in Mason City, which will continue to run production on three shifts.

Poultry overtakes pig as EU's largest animal feed segment
For the first time, poultry overtook pig as the largest feed segment in the European Union, according to figures prepared by Europe’s feed federation FEFAC for its latest annual congress. Poultry showed an annual growth rate of 3% to reach 50.89 million metric tons, whereas pig feed production recorded only a change of -0.1% to stay at 49.65 million metric tons.

USDA: US corn harvest estimate down due to Midwest storms
The U.S. corn harvest may be 2.3% smaller than originally forecast due to excessive storms in the Midwest, reaching a total of 13.2 billion bushels (as opposed to the initial estimate of 13.505 billion bushels), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA estimate of inventories before the 2012 harvest is down to 695 million bushels, a 23% decrease from the 900 million bushels estimated in May.

Wheat and bajra, also known as pearl millet, are being used as substitutes for corn in chicken feed as corn prices in India continue to rise. Wheat is currently selling for Rs 7.50 (US$0.17) per kilogram, while bajra and broken rice are selling for Rs 11,000 (US$242.89) per metric ton.

Ghana poultry farmers burdened by high yellow corn prices
Ghana's poultry farmers are calling for the government to provide a buffer stock of yellow corn in an attempt to help combat rising animal feed prices, according to the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers. Right now, 125 kilograms of yellow corn is selling at GH¢100 (US$65.60); the same amount was selling at GH¢60.00 (US$39.36) in March.
