The growing role of DDGS in poultry nutrition
Ongoing high feed prices have meant that the search for new ways to decrease poultry feed costs has become more important than ever. According to the Poultry Science Association, PSA, researchers at the University of Nebraska have identified one possible approach that may be effective for laying hens – increasing the percentage of dried distiller’s grains with solubles, DDGS, used in hens diets.

Missouri turkey feed diet may save producers money
The Missouri Ideal Turkey Protein diet, a formula based on the exact nutrient requirements of turkeys, may save producers about $30 per ton of feed, according to Jeff Firman, a University of Missouri Extension poultry scientist. The protein-based diet, which focuses on adjusting the amino acids in the turkeys' diet, helps reduce overfeeding and brings down costs by not wasting nutrients, said Firman.

Canada animal feed supplier to shut down poultry feed mill
Canadian animal feed supplier Shur-Gain will shut down its poultry and livestock feed mill operations in Stephenville, Newfoundland, by the end of 2011, according to Réjean Faubert, the company's Atlantic region general manager. The mill is closing due to a low volume of finished feeds being manufactured and limited profitability at the operation, said Faubert.

Kenya poultry farmers switching to broilers on increased layer costs
Kenya's poultry farmers are scaling down their layer flocks and even switching to broiler businesses instead due to increased egg production costs and low returns. Chicken feed has seen price increases from Sh1,670 (US$17.22) per 70-kilogram bag in 2010 to the current Sh2,820 (US$29.07) per bag.

A WATT-Rennier Poultry Confidence Index survey poll shows that 82% of respondents identified ‘grain prices’ as the top issue for the U.S. poultry industry for the remainder of 2011 and early 2012. The regulatory environment, the general economy and bird health/diseases were essentially tied as the third-most important issue.

Corn outlook leads to conflicting price forecasts for 2011/12
The immediate economic certainty for poultry companies is that corn supplies remain tight, even with larger than expected beginning stocks for the 2011/12 crop year. The October 12 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates raised beginning corn stocks by 208 million bushels to 1.128 billion bushels. And while the WASDE forecast for ending stocks was raised by 194 million bushels to 866 million with reduced exports, that level of ending stocks is equivalent to only 25 days of use – below the 30 days considered by analysts to be a safe level.

Europe seeks home-grown rule for organic feed production
A proposed change in feed rules for organic livestock production in Europe's EU-27 countries is under consideration by the European Commission's Standing Committee on Organic Farming. Advocates of the change want to see a minimum percentage placed on the amount of feed given to organically reared animals and poultry grown on the same farm.

Input costs affect poultry feed production
Estimates compiled by our associated publication Feed International suggest that world compound feed production for all species by industrial feed mills in 2010 increased by about 1.4%, to a new record of approximately 718 million metric tons with a combined market value of about $240 billion. Further growth in 2011 has been constrained primarily by high feed grain prices globally, although Asian countries have continued to deliver extra volumes to meet local requirements.

Has the US poultry industry turned the corner on high feed costs?
Corn futures for delivery in December reached a high near $7.80 a bushel in late August, while the price September 20 is closer to $7.05, despite USDA’s September 12 downward revision in the corn production forecast. Will the U.S. poultry industry look back a year from now and be able to say this was the turning point on $7-a-bushel corn prices?

Selenium and adding value to poultry products
Selenium deficiency in poultry is associated with decreased productive and reproductive performances, and the development of various diseases affecting major body systems including the muscles, heart-vascular and nervous system. Addressing selenium deficiencies, however, does not only improve poultry health, there is also the potential for selenium-enriched food to benefit human health.
