Feeding value of guar meal and the application of enzymes in improving nutritive value for broilers

US senators, representatives ask EPA to adjust corn ethanol mandate
U.S. senators and House representatives have called on the Environmental Protection Agency to adjust the corn-ethanol mandate for the Renewable Fuel Standard due to the continuing severe drought, according to reports. Their request joins an existing coalition of livestock, poultry, meat, dairy and feed organizations that has already delivered a petition to the EPA asking for a waiver “in whole or in substantial part” of the amount of renewable fuel that must be produced under the Renewable Fuel Standard for the remainder of 2012 and for the portion of 2013 that is one year from the time the waiver becomes effective.

Study determines energy available to broilers from corn distillers grains
Researchers at Purdue University have determined the amount of metabolizable energy available to young broiler chickens from dried corn distillers grains, DDG, and dried corn distillers grains with solubles, DDGS. Currently, more than 35 percent of the annual U.S. corn crop is being used for ethanol production, resulting in less and more expensive corn for use in diets for poultry and other livestock.

Trinidad & Tobago poultry, livestock feed prices expected to rise
Trinidad & Tobago's poultry and livestock feed prices are expected to rise in response to the U.S. drought — local feed producers said they saw corn and soybean prices increase 20 percent in their last shipment, and expect that number to go up another 33 percent in the next shipment, according to reports. The nation must import nearly 100 percent of its raw feed ingredients.

Turkey producers seek waiver of Renewable Fuel Standard
As the worst drought in more than a generation continues, the National Turkey Federation and other poultry and livestock producers have begun taking action to soften the blow on feed costs. In late July, National Turkey Federation and its coalition partners petitioned the federal government to grant a waiver to the Renewable Fuel Standard. The extreme weather conditions are causing significant damage to the nation’s corn crop, driving up corn prices and causing some analysts to predict a corn shortage later in the year. The coalition’s petition clarifies that relief from the Renewable Fuel Standard is urgent as ethanol now consumes more corn than animal agriculture, and the mandate gives ethanol producers a leg up in securing corn when supplies are tight.

Poultry, meat organizations call for ethanol production mandate waiver
As U.S. drought conditions continue to be the worst in 56 years, and corn yield forecasts continue to drop significantly, a coalition of poultry and meat organizations have asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to waive the federal mandate for the production of corn ethanol. In a petition delivered to the agency, the coalition asked for a waiver “in whole or in substantial part” of the amount of renewable fuel that must be produced under the Renewable Fuels Standard for the remainder of 2012 and for the portion of 2013 that is one year from the time the waiver becomes effective.

India poultry feed prices up 69 percent in 2012
India's poultry feed prices have increased by 69 percent so far in 2012 due to lack of rainfall and higher global rates, according to reports, making it likely that chicken and egg prices will also increase throughout the year. The 69 percent year-on-year rise in July is up from the 18 percent increase in June, said research firm Nomura.

Heat-damaged corn crops may raise poultry prices in Delmarva
Heat-damaged corn and soybean crops in the Delmarva Peninsula (an area that includes most of Delaware and some of Maryland and Virginia) could lead to higher poultry prices in the area as feed prices are affected, according to farmers. Twenty-six percent of corn and soybean crops were poor or very poor in Maryland as of July 8, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Perinatal imprinting in poultry benefits performance
The emerging science of epigenetics and nutrigenomics could rewrite the book on the nutritional requirements of broilers, according to scientists speaking at the Alltech 28th annual international symposium. Manipulating gene expression around the time of hatching – or even earlier at the breeder stage – can condition birds for specific tissue development and nutritional requirements later in life.

Tyson stops using wheat in poultry feed
Tyson Foods Inc. has stopped using wheat in its poultry feed due to prices rising above those for corn, according to reports, ending a practice that began in 2011 when wheat prices fell below those of corn for the first time in 15 years. The change in current practice, which other companies are also headed towards, could put a strain on U.S. corn supplies, which are set to drop to their lowest level in 16 years during the summer, say analysts.
