RFS waiver for corn ethanol: Would it benefit poultry producers?
The ethanol blend wall and the short-fall in cellulosic ethanol production may become more crucial to poultry producers than today’s controversy over a waiver of the Renewable Fuel Standard. Whether or not there will be a waiver in 2013 of the Renewable Fuel Standard for ethanol produced from corn is to be decided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by November 13.

The U.S. ethanol mandate and current feed costs were hot topics at the National Chicken Council's 58th Annual Conference industry outlook panel, with panelists focusing on the ongoing debate over the renewable fuel standard and "food versus fuel." In 2006, the ethanol mandate began to really take a bite against the protein complex, and since that time on a cumulative basis, we’ve seen about $31 billion in new costs that have come in to the chicken business, said panelist Paul Fox, CEO of O.K. Foods.

California poultry company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
California-based poultry company Zacky Farms LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy October 8 with the United States Bankruptcy Court, but said normal operations and customer service will continue without disruption. Due to historically high corn and soybean meal prices, Zacky incurred significant operating losses that depleted its liquidity and working capital position.

AB Agri researches insect-derived poultry, pig feed protein options
A project focusing on using insect-derived feed protein as a replacement for expensive soybean meal and fishmeal in poultry and pig diets is being spearheaded by the parent company of British poultry and pig compound feed manufacturer ABN, AB Agri. The project involves entomologists, biochemists and nutritionists, combining the expertise within ABN with that of scientists at the Food and Environment Research Agency.

Bangladesh poultry feed industry calls for corn export ban
Bangladesh's poultry feed industry has called for a ban on corn exports in an attempt to stabilize the domestic prices of poultry and eggs, according to reports, saying that rising feed prices will otherwise continue to affect the market. Poultry feed prices have increased 80 to 100 percent in the last month, said Feed Industry Association of Bangladesh President Ihtehsham B. Shahjahan.

Georgia governor latest to call for ethanol mandate waiver
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has become the latest to petition the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requesting that the Renewable Fuel Standard be waived in light of the current drought plaguing the Midwest. The University of Georgia has reported that the state’s poultry producers are spending $1.4 million extra per day on corn due to the drought and the upward pressure on corn prices caused by the demand created by the Renewable Fuel Standard for ethanol.

Europe feed makers, farmers struggling with high grain costs
European animal feed makers are saying they have limited options when it comes to making substitutes to cope with rising global grain costs, and farmers dealing with increased feed costs say they may be forced to reduce their herds as meat prices fail to keep pace, according to reports. Global corn and wheat prices rose 50 percent and soybeans roughly 20 percent in the six weeks to the end of July as the U.S. entered a drought that continues to present challenges.

Poultry price increases inevitable in wake of global grain shortage
The current world grain shortage caused by the prolonged drought in the U.S., coupled with excessive rains in Northern Europe, is having a significant impact on poultry meat production worldwide, according to the International Poultry Council. High prices of feed grains in particular are pushing up the cost of producing commercial poultry, and poultry price increases are inevitable, says the council.
