New packaging for own-brand chicken and fish being introduced by the U.K’s second largest supermarket chain Sainsbury’s should save 694 metric tons (MT) of plastic per annum.

Where chicken is concerned, the retailer is rolling out cardboard trays across its premium Taste the Difference and standard by Sainsbury’s breaded chicken lines, which could save 300 MT of plastic a year.

Additionally, the packaging will also be introduced throughout summer 2023 across many of the company’s seasonal chicken favorites.

Sainsbury’s notes that the cardboard trays being adopted across its breaded chicken ranges are easily recyclable, helping consumers to reduce their household waste by placing the packaging in curbside recycling at home. It continues that change to its chicken and fish packaging will be a significant step in its plastic reduction goals.

Part of broader program

The company recently launched a new logo, “Good to Know” and this is being applied to some of the new packaging, amongst other areas.

The logo was developed to help its customers find products that are more sustainable, including those with reduced plastic packaging.  The logo is being used in various contexts to raise awareness around a range of subjects including sourcing, recycling and philanthropy and, where, for example, chicken is concerned the tagline may be: “All our fresh and frozen chicken by Sainsbury’s have more room to roam”. The logo will also highlight the company’s Pan for Better, which sets out the company’s sustainability goals.
