USDA finalizes 'Product of USA' label claims

The enforcement of the rule means products are entirely sourced and processed in the United States.

At the National Farmers Union Annual Convention, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the finalization of a rule to align the voluntary “Product of USA” label claim with consumer expectations. The USDA also disclosed investments of $9.5 million in 42 projects through the Local Meat Capacity grant program, aimed at bolstering processing options in the meat and poultry industry. Additionally, actions were outlined to ensure transparency and competition in the U.S. seed industry.

“This announcement underscores our commitment to consumer trust and fairness,” said  Vilsack. “The finalized rule ensures that the ‘Product of USA’ label reflects products entirely sourced and processed in the United States, offering consumers authentic information about their food origins.”

The finalized “Product of USA” rule prohibits misleading labeling and is backed by stakeholder petitions, thousands of comments and consumer survey data. It maintains voluntary status and allows for other U.S. origin claims, with accompanying processing details. Establishments must comply with the new requirements by January 1, 2026.

Local Meat Capacity Grant Program

USDA’s Local Meat Capacity (Local MCap) grant program, with an initial $9.5 million investment, supports projects enhancing processing infrastructure for local livestock and poultry producers. The program aims to increase processing availability and variety, strengthening local economies and offering consumers more choices.

Farmer Seed Liaison Initiative

USDA is enhancing transparency and competition in the U.S. seed industry through the Farmer Seed Liaison Initiative, elevating farmer voices and enforcing Federal Seed Act compliance. Efforts include a Website Monitoring Program and increased outreach to educate producers about labeling requirements.
