Newspaper: Malaysian government should support swine production

Remedy sought to control prices

The Malaysian government should establish a central pig farm to ensure a steady supply of pork year-round and control prices, said an editorial in Sin Chew Daily, a Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia.

The newspaper also called on the government to investigate whether farmers and retailers have been truthful in stating that there is a shortage of swine in the country. “Or is this just an excuse by pig sellers to hike up the price of pork?” the editorial said.

The newspaper added that the government had acted correctly by allowing more pork imports for Chinese New Year celebrations but that, in the long run, an increase in domestic production is preferable to a boost in imports.
