Court closes kosher poultry plant

Unsanitary conditions said to endanger consumers

A federal judge has ordered New Square Meats, a processor of kosher poultry in New York state, to shut its doors immediately because of unsanitary conditions, according to the local newspaper The Journal News.

New Square Meats had requested a two-week delay to the temporary closing, but Judge Stephen C. Robinson said the risk of illness to consumers was too great to justify a postponement.

Federal investigators say the business has committed numerous health code violations, including selling uninspected poultry since 2002, failing to furnish employee restrooms with soap or hand sanitizer, and not cleaning poultry residue from the walls, light fixtures or offices of its 5,000-square-foot facility.

New Square Meats is the only supplier of poultry to the Hasidic village of New Square in New York state’s Lower Hudson Valley, according to The Journal News. The newspaper reports that the business is planning the construction of a 26,250-square-foot, $3 million facility to replace the current slaughterhouse.
