Poland’s pig numbers at 39-year low

Sector profitability stalls the rate of swine decrease

A sharp fall in Poland’s pig numbers during the first half of this year resulted in a significant increase in pig slaughter prices.

The number of pigs in Poland at the end of March was just 13.3 million, the lowest number since 1970, according to Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS). Falls in numbers were recorded in every weight group.

However, an increase in breeding sector profitability since December 2008 has stalled the rate of decrease in total pig numbers. The fall in the rate of decline was particularly marked in sow numbers, said a GUS spokesperson.

Piglet prices in June this year were 28% higher than in December last year.
