Chile farmers ask for additional import duties on Argentina poultry
Chile's farm bureau is petitioning for a 15 percent surcharge duty on imported Argentine chicken, an additional import duty of 25 percent on corn with a high percentage of cracked kernels and a 30 percent duty for feed mixtures with significant cracked corn content, according to reports. Chicken imports to Chile have increased by 20 percent since 2008.

The cost of both energy and protein in poultry diets have flirted with record high levels over the past year. These high costs put a premium on squeezing every bit of nutrition out of feedstuffs to keep costs down and improve bottom line results. Dr. Roselina Angel, professor, University of Maryland, speaking at the 2012 Midwest Poultry Federation Convention Pre-Show Nutrition Symposium, said that nutrient digestion and absorption from poultry diets can be influenced by a number of factors, including the addition of enzymes to the diet.

Poultry industry responds to Johns Hopkins feather meal report
The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association has responded to the results of a recent study that found fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics banned for use in poultry, in feather meal, a poultry production byproduct that is made from poultry feathers and is a common additive to chicken, swine, cattle and fish feed. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Arizona State University said they found the antibiotics in eight of 12 feather meal samples from different states, suggesting that the poultry received the fluoroquinolones before they were slaughtered.

A U.S. federal judge has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to begin proceedings to withdraw approval for the use of common antibiotics in animal feed, citing concerns that overuse is endangering human health by creating antibiotic-resistant superbugs, according to reports. The FDA began such proceedings in 1977, prompted by concerns of the widespread use of certain antibiotics, such as tetracyclines and penicillin, in livestock feed, but the approval remained in place.
