The presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in commercial poultry flocks in South Dakota and Minnesota on October 19.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), each state had one new outbreak.

The affected flock in South Dakota was a commercial meat turkey flock in Spink County. About 34,000 birds were involved.

The affected flock in Minnesota was identified by APHIS as a commercial breeder operation, but information regarding the species was not disclosed. There were 20,400 birds involved.

With these new cases, Minnesota and South Dakota have both had six commercial flocks affected in 2023.

This marks the second premises in Becker County to have been infected with HPAI this year. The other was a flock of 2,700 breeder toms. Other Minnesota cases that have been confirmed this fall have been in the counties of Blue Earth, Redwood and Meeker.

Other counties in South Dakota where the presence of HPAI has been confirmed include Falk, McPherson, Jerauld and Beadle.

In 2022, Minnesota and South Dakota had more commercial flocks affected by HPAI than any other states. Minnesota had 81 confirmed outbreaks, while South Dakota had 61. Pennsylvania ranked a distant third with 25.

So far in 2023, the following states have had confirmed cases of HPAI in commercial poultry: Minnesota, Utah, South Dakota, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, California, Iowa, Virginia and Tennessee. However, only South Dakota, Minnesota and Utah have had HPAI infections in commercial flocks since April.

In Canada, the following provinces have had HPAI infections in commercial poultry operations in 2023: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Ontario.
