Holden Farms, a fifth-generation, family-operated farm, has been recognized with the prestigious Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY). Nominated by the Tennessee Poultry Association, Holden Farms was one of only three farms nationwide to receive the award at the 2025 International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta. USPOULTRY sponsors this annual award to honor exceptional environmental stewardship by family farmers in the poultry and egg industry.
Award applicants were evaluated based on:
- Nutrient management planning
- Sustainability practices
- Community involvement
- Innovative litter & manure management
- Education & outreach participation
A team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies, and state poultry associations reviewed applications and conducted farm visits before selecting winners.
Established in 1997, Holden Farms is managed by Kris and Rebecca Holden and their sons, Hunter and Hayden. The family oversees 2,085 acres of crops and operates Holden Barns Partnership, a six-house poultry operation added in 2022. Impressively, the farm maintains five Century Farms, with three more set to achieve this historic designation—a recognition given to farms continuously operated by the same family for over 100 years.
Innovative Environmental Practices
The integration of poultry barns has significantly enhanced sustainability efforts at Holden Farms:
Reduction in Commercial Fertilizers--Poultry litter is used as organic fertilizer, improving soil health and crop yields while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers
Nutrient-Rich Soil--The farm has seen steady increases in essential micronutrients such as copper, sulfur, zinc, and magnesium, thanks to precise litter application
Runoff Control & Wildlife Support--Numerous ponds across the property help manage runoff while ensuring a consistent water source for wildlife
Biodiversity & Habitat Conservation--The Holdens preserve woodlands, buffer zones and fence rows, protecting mature hardwood trees and providing crucial wildlife habitats
Wildlife Plots for Sustainable Ecosystems--Carefully maintained wildlife plots offer food sources for animals, ensuring a thriving natural ecosystem alongside farming operations
Recognition & Industry Leadership
The award was presented to the Holden family by Bill Griffith, COO of Peco Foods and USPOULTRY vice chair, during the expo. The Holden family’s commitment to environmental responsibility, innovation and sustainable agriculture showcases the vital role family farms play in shaping the future of American poultry production.
