In partnership with packaging solutions company, Amcor, Tyson Foods has shifted more of its products into a new sustainable packaging, AmPrima.

“At Tyson Foods, we’re constantly looking for innovative solutions that enable us to be a more sustainable food company, and packaging is a great example of that,” said Jeff Czarny, senior director, research and development, at Tyson Foods. “We’re proud to partner with an industry leader like Amcor on sustainable packaging solutions as we work to build a more sustainable food system, together.”

What is Amcor’s AmPrima packaging?

This time around, Tyson’s Jimmy Dean egg bites and frittatas will be packaged in AmPrima – a forming/non-forming flexible film. Tyson and Amcor have partnered in the past when creating sustainable packaging for Tyson’s Instant Pot Meal Kits.

When recycled, AmPrima has a 70% reduction in carbon footprint compared to a more standard, less sustainable packaging film as well as an 80% reduction in non-renewable energy demands and a 68% reduction in water consumption, according to Amcor’s press release

Also, if the packaging goes to a landfill, it will have a 29% reduction in carbon footprint.

“The packaging is designed to be recycled through in-store drop off, or curbside where available,” said Tara Cruz, principal product development engineer at Amcor. “With AmPrima, the package’s sustainability is improved through the manufacturing and recycling process, which also increases the availability of post-consumer recycled content and strengthens the circular economy for plastic.”

Tyson’s other sustainable packaging initiatives

Tyson has been testing various sustainable packaging methods including pulp fiber trays, integrated paper board and liner, and 100% recyclable Thermoformable pouches, according to the company’s 2021 Sustainability Report

According to WATTPoultry.com’s Top Companies Database, Tyson Foods is the second largest poultry producer in the world with 1,882 million head slaughtered annually.
