US, Russia continuing talks on ractopamine-free turkey and pork
Not satisfied that the U.S. has done enough to assure turkey and pork exports to Russia would be free of ractopamine, the Russian veterinary and food safety agency, Rosselkhoznador, has scheduled additional talks with U.S. officials on August 21. In February, Russia placed a ban on U.S. turkey, pork and beef products because of worries over ractopamine use in feeds.

Poultry processor buys Cargill feed facility
Cargill's animal nutrition business has completed the sale of its feed manufacturing facility in Hanford, Calif., to Pitman Family Farms, a family-owned poultry processor. Pitman Family Farms agreed to buy the land, buildings and machinery from Cargill.

USDA lowers corn production, corn yield forecasts for 2013
The outlook for U.S. corn production in 2013 was reduced in August, largely based on anticipated lower corn yields. The USDA on August 11 released its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, which forecast the United States corn crop at 13.8 billion bushels.

Final 2013 Renewable Fuel Standard requires further action, says NCC
The National Chicken Council praised the Environmental Protection Agency for its willingness to adjust the Renewable Fuel Standard, but said the final standard for 2013 established on August 7 does not go far enough to truly help the poultry industry. National Chicken Council President Mike Brown added that further action from Congress to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard is the best way to give poultry and livestock producers more market certainty for the feed grains that are also used in renewable fuels.

In the recent past, the goal of an average broiler complex was 2:2:42, which meant growing a two kilogram bird (4.4 pounds), with a feed conversion of 2:1, in 42 days. With continued genetic advances, broiler producers will be able to reach that same weight with just one kilogram of feed, probably by 2025.

Cal-Maine Foods reports increase in net sales, loss in earnings
Cal-Maine Foods reported an increase in net sales for the fourth quarter of 2013, but a settlement of a direct purchaser class claim against the company hurt profits, as Cal-Maine Foods experienced a net loss for the quarter ending June 1. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, net sales were $325.9 million compared with net sales of $275.2 million for the fourth quarter a year ago, the company announced on July 29.

National Chicken Council vice president testifies on Renewable Fuel Standard
National Chicken Council Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Bill Roenigk told the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power that the Renewable Fuel Standard, at least for conventional biofuels, is broken beyond repair, and that it is imperative at this time for Congress to take a critical look at the Renewable Fuel Standard. Roenigk appeared before the subcommittee on July 24.
