An EU-funded project, Proteinsect, is working to change European legislation to allow the inclusion of insects in poultry and other animal feeds. The group notes that there is growing interest in the use of insects as an alternative source of protein in animal feed; however, current EU legislation represents a barrier to the development of large-scale production processes.

UK egg producer participating in lupin feed trial as alternative to soya
A trial to evaluate yellow lupins in layer feed is being carried out by UK egg producer Birchgrove Eggs in conjunction with the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS).The 18-week commercial trial sees Birchgrove feeding its hens a layers mash where most of the protein component of the feed is provided by yellow lupins instead of the usual soya protein.

Biofuel development shouldn’t compromise food security, says UN group
Following a week of intense discussions, the United Nations' Committee on World Food Security on October 11 stressed the link between biofuels and food security, saying that the "progressive realization of the right to adequate food for all" should be a priority concern in biofuel development. The world's most important intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder  platform for food security and nutrition said biofuel development "should not compromise food security, and should especially consider women and smallholders."

Merger of rendering companies expected to be finalized October 28
Darling International expects to close on the purchase of Rothsay, the rendering and biodiesel division of Maple Leaf Foods, on October 28, subject to satisfaction of any remaining conditions. The Competition Act condition required to proceed with the purchase was announced on October 3, clearing the way for the transaction to close.

Cal-Maine Foods reports drop in net income, increase in net sales
Cal-Maine Foods reported net sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 increased 17 percent, while the net income dropped nearly 7 percent when compared to the first quarter of fiscal year 2013. The largest egg producer in the United States released its financial results for the quarter ending August 31 on September 30.

Changes to feed, poultry weighing rules go into effect
Changes to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) rules for weighing feed and poultry have taken effect as of September 20. Its impact will be felt strongly by the poultry and swine industries, which had little time to prepare for the changes, Clayton Bailey, partner in the Dallas law firm of Bailey Brauer PPLC, said.
