Brazil is experiencing its first outbreak of Newcastle disease in commercial poultry flock since 2006.

According to a report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the presence of the Newcastle disease was confirmed on July 17 in which a commercial broiler flock in Anta Gorda, in the state of Rio Grande do Sol, was affected.

The flock included 14,400 chickens, and of those, 3,472 died.

Brazil’s official veterinary services reported the outbreak to the WOAH, after conducting gene sequencing testing.

The following control measures have been put in place: zoning, surveillance within a restricted zone, movement control and traceability, the WOAH report stated. Other procedures to be implemented include stamping out, disinfection, and official disposal of carcasses, byproducts and waste.
