Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in two commercial meat turkey flocks in Ohio and one commercial broiler flock in Maryland.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), all three flock infections were confirmed on January 14.
Avian influenza in Ohio
One of the affected flocks involved 9,900 turkeys in Darke County, and the other involved 4,500 turkeys in Mercer County.
Ohio has had four commercial flocks struck by HPAI in 2025, three of which have been in Darke County, which also had another flock affected by the virus on December 27, 2024.
This is the first instance of HPAI in Mercer County during the 2022-25 outbreak.
Avian influenza in Maryland
APHIS confirmed the presence of HPAI in a flock of 228,300 commercial broilers in Caroline County.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) had previously identified that flock as “presumed positive” for HPAI.
MDA has since announced another presumed positive case of HPAI in a commercial poultry operation in Queen Anne’s County, but it did not offer information concerning the type of poultry in the flock or how many birds were involved.
