The root cause of Gangrenous dermatitis, whether it starts with injury to the skin (outside in) or with chlostridia in the intestines (inside out), has been a mystery for years. Dr. G. Donald Ritter, director of health services for Mountaire Farms Inc., has conducted both basic and applied research on the causes and prevention of Gangrenous dermatitis in broilers. He will present evidence he has developed which points to an “inside out” origin for Gangrenous dermatitis.

Once unheard of in turkeys, Gangrenous dermatitis has become a major problem for U.S. turkey producers. Dr. Steven Davis, Colorado Quality Research, has developed a research model can reliably reproduce Gangrenous dermatitis in turkey flocks. He explains how his model works and what has been learned so far in his research.
