U.S. government knew about bacteria in turkey, reports WSJ
WSJ reports that federal officials said they turned up a dangerous form of Salmonella at a Cargill Inc. turkey plant last year, and then four times this year at stores selling the Cargill turkey, but didn't move for a recall until an outbreak killed one person and sickened 77 others. Cargill and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the recall of ground turkey from the Cargill plant in Springdale, Ark., on Aug. 3.

A Midwest Meat Packing Facilities turkey plant in Gibbon, Neb., as well as the surrounding grounds, remains vacant and unsold after an auction where cooling systems and other turkey processing equipment were bid on, according to an official with the City of Gibbon. Midwest Meat Packing Facilities entered Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcy in March, 2013, closing the Nebraska turkey plant that had as many as 50 employees.

Verdict in case of abused turkey plant workers reduced to $1.6 million
A $240 million verdict awarded to 32 mentally disabled workers who were subjected to years of abuse by their handlers at a turkey processing plant will be reduced to $1.6 million because of a federal cap. Attorneys for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and defendant Henry's Turkey Service agreed in legal briefs that, under federal law, each plaintiff can recover only $50,000 apiece, the Associated Press reported.

A federal jury on May 1 awarded $240 million to 32 mentally disabled men who were exploited by the now defunct Henry's Turkey Services, who employed them at a rate of 41 cents an hour. The verdict averages out to $7.5 million per former employee.
