Poultry industry needs deep balance sheet to ride out slow recovery

Terry Barr of CoBank says the poultry industry faces dual economic challenges – an unusually slow economic recovery because of weakness in the financial and housing sectors and extreme volatility in corn prices caused by ethanol mandates.

  • Calm commentary and in my opinion - spot on. Whoever thinks we'll be pulling out of this "recession" in the near future is fooling themselves. The poultry processors that have hedged their bets on the price of corn properly are the ones that will grown their EBITA - the ones that haven't are going to struggle to break even.
