Salmonella worries lead to Saskatchewan egg recall

No illnesses have been reported related to consumption of these eggs, but test results were concerning enough to issue recall.

Concerns over possible Salmonella contamination has led to the recall of eggs being distributed Star Egg Co. in Saskatchewan.

The recall was announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). No illnesses related to consumption of these eggs, but the recall was issued following concerns raised when reviewing test results. CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which could result in the recall of more eggs.

The agency is also in the process of verifying that the industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

The products affected by the recall are:

  • Compliments brand large size eggs, in dozen cartons, UPC 0 55742 35750 9, Code 2024MR14 S21
  • Harman brand medium size eggs, in dozen cartons, UPC 0 63902 00202 2, Code 2024MR28 S-21
  • Star Egg brand extra large size eggs, in 15 dozen packaging, Code 2024MR07 S-21
  • Star Egg brand large size eggs, package of 60, UPC 0 63902 05030, Codes 2024MR07; 2024MR14; 2024MR21; 2024AL04 and 2024AL19
  • Star Egg brand medium size eggs, 15 dozen packaging, Code 2024MR21 S-21
  • No name large size white eggs, package of 60, UPC 0 60383 22293 2, Codes 2024MR07; 2024MR14; 2024MR21; 2024AL04 and 2024AL19

Consumers who may have purchased or consumed any of these products are encouraged to discard the eggs or return them to where they were purchased.

According to its website, Star Egg is a Saskatchewan-based company specializing in the grading, distribution and marketing of shell eggs in western Canada. Its eggs come from 65 local farm operations.

The company recently was the recipient of a CA$5 million (US$3.71 million) grant from the Canadian government to help the company modernize and automate the packaging process, as well as install new processing equipment to enable in-house egg processing activities.
